The Interfaith Millennium Development Goals Coalition was founded to mobilize public, political, and media support for the Millennium Development Goals and the United States providing its promised 0.7% of gross national income for official development aid.
| Action Conference: The Interfaith Millennium Development Goals Coalition is organizing an action conference April 20–21, 2010, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 1111 Gough at Geary, San Francisco. This conference is open to religious and lay leaders, the media, and the general public. The purposes of the action conference are to educate people on the Millennium Development Goals and the resources we need to mobilize to achieve them, to bring people into action, and to foster new chapters of our coalition throughout the United States. |
Luncheon for religious and interfaith leaders: On Wednesday, April 1, 2009, we hosted a luncheon for religious and interfaith leaders to mobilize support for our work, both in the Bay Area and beyond (Media coverage). We are organizing similar events in Los Angeles in the fall of 2009 and in Boston and Washington DC in 2010.
Past Action Conferences: Over one thousand people from across the country gathered at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco on October 27–28, 2006, to discuss ways to reduce global poverty at a national conference sponsored by several major Catholic organizations, including the USF Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought and the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Point 7 Now Coalition expanded as an interfaith group and on October 27, 2007, organized the Point 7 Now Action Conference.
Current top legislative goal: ensuring that the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 is rewritten with a strong commitment to the Millennium Development Goals. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA), representing Van Nuys and the San Fernando Valley, has repeatedly said that he intends to rewrite the Foreign Assistance Act.
